Forming The Photograph: A Masterclass in Composition

June 15-29, 2024

Enrollment Closes: May 31, 2024

Forming The Photograph: A Masterclass In Visual Composition explores the subtle art of visual photographic storytelling. In order to effectively communicate their vision, photographers must make deliberate, artful decisions about what to include in the frame and how it is placed in relation to their perspective.

Through creative assignments—including shooting portraits, environments, and landscapes—this masterclass experience empowers students to expand their vision and experiment with the new tools of masterful composition drawn from the lessons of contemporary and historical photographers and artists.

This experience will provide a solid foundation of information and experience that participants can take forward into their continuing practice of photography and visual composition. In addition, the course will facilitate an opportunity for photographers to form their own personal photographic compositional study and to exchange ideas and lessons with fellow classmates.

Each participant receives exclusive access to:
– Personal Video Critiques with Dr. Craig Havens
– 24/7 Access to Course Videos and Materials
– Peer Review Feedback Sessions
– Group Discussion Forums
– Online Knowledge Base and Technical Resources

Course Features:
The course will provide beginning and advanced photographers with a complete skill set regarding the following facets of photographic composition: Framing, Lighting, Camera Perspective, Hierarchy of Meaning, Constructing Narrative and Visual Flow, The Golden Mean, Negative Space, Guiding, Scale, Depth and Line.

Dr. Craig Havens (PhD) is a visual artist and educator working in the lens-based media of photography, video and printmaking with over 25 years of experience as a professional photographer, fine artist and lecturer. Dr. Havens addresses each student individually in terms of their technical and artistic development. He then works to provide a context for their work within the larger dialogue of lens-based contemporary arts practice. Through carefully structured class assignments and individual projects, students are presented with opportunities to formulate questions whose solutions lay deeper within the creative process.
